Five things you can do on Kindness Day SG

Kindness Day SG (KDSG) was inaugurated in 2013 as an occasion for Singaporeans to come together in celebration of kindness and graciousness. It is to inspire one another and transform our society into a nation of kindness. This day is celebrated as a day for showing appreciation to one another, with the iconic symbol of the yellow gerbera. This year, KDSG falls on May 20 with the theme “Kindness: An expression of love”. Read on for tips on how we can make life brighter and more beautiful for those around us this month!
1. Start with children
Parents are a child’s first role models and their most important teachers. This Kindness Day, start with talking to your children about the importance of being kind with helpful children’s books that champion kindness. Or go one step further with a family activity! Put aside old clothes and appliances and drop them off at a donation centre near you.
2. Take care of the Environment
This Kindness Day, we should also remember to be kind to the environment and the world we live in. There are various environmental initiatives out there, such as the East Coast Beach Clean Up and the Plogging Movement – where you run while picking up trash!
3. Say ‘Hi’ to your neighbours
A house feels less of a home if we are strangers to those who live closest to us. This Kindness Day, try stepping out of your comfort zone and get to know your neighbours better. After all, we are neighbours by chance, friends by choice.
4. Practise self-care
Don’t forget to show kindness to yourself this Kindness Day. Write a love poem to yourself and read it out loud. Write down the things you appreciate about yourself and your life. Your mental health is especially important in these uncertain times.
5. Do a random act of kindness
Give compliments. Smile at strangers. Hold a door open. Give up your seat on a crowded train. Perform at least three random acts of kindness and see what magic follows!
